In a corporate intranet environment, the LATNET server attaches to the PBX in each on-net office, and serves as a gateway between the PBX and the IP network. When a user originates a call or a fax, it passes through the PBX, through the LATNET Gateway into the IP network. At the distant end, the process is repeated.

In a carrier or public network environment, LATNET functions as a gateway between the local public switched network and the Internet. It can be housed virtually anywhere—at an independent regional site or co-located with other communications equipment in an existing switching center or central office.
